Swedish V2 Word Order Explained Simply

Swedish is a V2 (Verb-Second) language. This means the finite (conjugated) verb must almost always be the second element in a main clause. If you start a sentence with a time or place (adverbial), the subject and verb must swap places so the verb remains in the second position.

Inversion

Normal: Jag åker till Stockholm idag. (I travel to Stockholm today.) Inverted: Idag åker jag till Stockholm. (Today travel I to Stockholm.)

Example Sentences

Idag regnar det.

Today it is raining.

På morgonen dricker jag kaffe.

In the morning I drink coffee.

Igår såg vi en film.

Yesterday we saw a movie.
