En vs Ett Words (Gendered Nouns)
In Swedish, nouns are either 'en' words (common gender) or 'ett' words (neuter gender). About 80% of Swedish nouns are 'en' words. You must memorize the gender of each noun, as it affects adjectives, articles, and plurals.
V2 Word Order
Swedish is a V2 (Verb-Second) language. This means the finite (conjugated) verb must almost always be the second element in a main clause. If you start a sentence with a time or place (adverbial), the subject and verb must swap places so the verb remains in the second position.
The Definite Form (The)
Unlike English where you put 'the' before a noun, Swedish usually attaches a suffix to the end of the noun to make it definite.
Plural Nouns (Declensions)
Swedish nouns are divided into five declensions (plural groups). The ending depends on whether it is an 'en' or 'ett' word, and what letter it ends with.
The 4 Verb Groups
Swedish verbs are grouped into four main categories based on how they conjugate in the present, past, and supine tenses.
