Swedish The 4 Verb Groups Explained Simply

Swedish verbs are grouped into four main categories based on how they conjugate in the present, past, and supine tenses.

The Groups

  • Group 1: Ends in -ar in present (arbeta -> arbetar). Most common group.
  • Group 2a/2b: Ends in -er in present, stem ends in consonant (ringa -> ringer / läsa -> läser).
  • Group 3: Ends in -r in present, stem ends in vowel (bo -> bor).
  • Group 4: Strong/Irregular verbs. Often change vowels in past tense (vara -> är -> var).
