Swedish The Definite Form (The) Explained Simply

Unlike English where you put 'the' before a noun, Swedish usually attaches a suffix to the end of the noun to make it definite.

Rules

  • For 'en' words ending in a consonant: add -en (bil -> bilen).
  • For 'en' words ending in a vowel: add -n (flicka -> flickan).
  • For 'ett' words ending in a consonant: add -et (hus -> huset).
  • For 'ett' words ending in a vowel: add -t (äpple -> äpplet).

Example Sentences

Bilen är röd.

The car is red.

Huset är gammalt.

Katten sover.

The cat is sleeping.
