Swedish flashcards that actually work (and a faster alternative)

Flashcards are the right idea done halfway. A card shows a word; you flip it; you feel like you learned it. But recognising the back of a card is not recall — and most flashcard decks let you pass without ever producing the answer. Here is how to make Swedish flashcards work, and where a game does it better.

What breaks ordinary flashcards

• Passive flipping. Seeing the answer feels like knowing. It is not — retrieval is (active recall).
• No real schedule. Reviewing everything every day wastes time on words you own and under-reviews the hard ones.
• No context. A bare word/translation pair gives your memory nothing to hook onto.

Fix 1 — force production, not recognition

Cover the answer and say it out loud before you check. Our word pages give you the hook: meaning, an example sentence, a listen button, and inflected forms — for example att göra ("to do"), att gå ("to go"), or en kvinna ("a woman").

Fix 2 — space reviews with SM-2

Give each card a next-review date that grows when you answer confidently and shrinks when you miss. That is SM-2 spaced repetition, and it is the single biggest upgrade to any flashcard routine.

Fix 3 — drill a focused deck, not everything

Start with high-frequency words: jag, du, vatten, mat, ett barn. Expand only once a cluster sticks. The full ordered deck is at /words.
