How to learn Swedish vocabulary fast (the honest method)
By LearnSwedishFast Team · 2 min read
Most "learn Swedish fast" advice skips the one thing that decides your speed: which words you drill, and how you review them. You do not need 20,000 words. You need the right ~1,000 and a review schedule that fights forgetting. Here is the method we built the free vocabulary game around.
1. Learn the 1,000 words that carry everyday Swedish
A small core of words covers most of what you hear. Start with function words and the highest-frequency content words, then expand. The whole ordered list lives at /words; a few of the first words worth owning early:
- jag — "I"
- du — "you"
- att göra — "to do"
- att gå — "to go"
- vatten — "water"
- mat — "food"
Each word page has a meaning, an example sentence, a listen button, and inflected forms — read it once, then drill.
2. Drill with active recall, not re-reading
Recognising a word in a list is not knowing it. Retrieval under mild time pressure is what builds durable memory (Karpicke & Roediger, 2008). The game forces you to produce the answer, so every round is a retrieval rep.
3. Space your reviews with SM-2
Cramming fades. Each word gets a next-review date: answer confidently and the interval grows; miss it and it shrinks. That is the SM-2 spaced-repetition engine, and it is why five focused minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
4. Anchor new words to ones you own
Learn in clusters. Around the body you already meet en hand, en mun, ett öga, and en kropp — grouping related words makes each one cheaper to remember.
